The iPhone 5S and Galaxy S4 also made it into Google's top ten highest trending topics for 2013 which is an impressive feat for Samsung who landed in the eighth spot. Apple's placed a little better coming in third. The highest trending topic for the year was Nelson Mandela followed by Paul Walker. Other topics that entered that list included Cory Monteith, Harlem Shake, Boston Marathon, Royal Baby, PlayStation 4 and North Korea.

Both of these lists were derived from Google's Zeitgeist 2013 report which also included top 10 searches for People, Events, Athletes, Google+ Hashtags, Performing Artists, TV Shows and Videos.

The iPhone 5S launched in the fall of this year and became one of Apple's highest selling handsets. The device features the new fingerprint sensor, an A7 chip with 64-bit capabilities and a slightly new design. It was released alongside the lower end iPhone 5C which ended up not making the list.

The Galaxy S4 was released in the spring of this year and features new eye and hand sensors that can detect a user's movements with the front camera and perform specific commands such as Smart Pause and Smart Scroll.
