iPhone 6, iPad Mini 3, iPad Pro and iPad Air 2 to Feature Thinner and Lighter Backlights
Apple will be using thinner and lighter backlights in some of its upcoming products to shift to skinnier components for the iPhone 6 and upcoming iPad models.
LEDinside reports that Apple will shift from 0.6mm thick side-view LED backlights to 0.4 mm thick modules for the next-gen iPhone.
"Industry insiders [project] the iPhone 6 will have a much lighter frame, which will lead to upgrades in LED backlight specs," read the report. "In previous generation, the iPhone used 0.6t side-view type LED, in contrast the new iPhone will probably be adopting 0.4t side-view type LED."
Rumors of Apple increasing the screen size of the iPhone 6 have been circling for quite some time. If the company does choose to shift in this direction, it would make more sense to create a lighter frame for these devices by employing this new backlight technology.
The site also claims that similar changes will be implemented into the company's tablets including the 12-inch iPad Pro. iPad backlights will shift to 0.6mm thick modules from their current 0.8mm components.
The iPhone 6 is also expected to cut down in other areas as the device is now rumored to feature an exterior design with no bezels.
The Korea Herald reports that Apple is currently working on an iPhone with a bezel-free display and a fingerprint sensor. Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S5 will feature a similar design with a more standard fingerprint sensor rather than the display-wide scanner or iris scanner that had been previously rumored for the handset.
Bloomberg reported back in November that the iPhone 6 was planned to feature a larger display with glass curves downward on the edges. This basically hinted at a screen with no bezels.
