iPhone 6, iPhone 5S Low-Cost Model Production Confirmed in Pegatron Report
The production of the new low-cost iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S was confirmed in a new report detailing the working conditions of the Pegatron factories it's made in.
The 60 page report confirms the existence of this long rumored plastic iPhone and also touches on the workers role to apply a protective film to the rear shell of the device before it enters into the assembly process.
"Today's work is to paste protective film on the iPhone's plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple," read the report.
It was written by China Labor Watch in response to some of the poor working conditions found within the factory.
"The task is pretty easy, and I was able to work independently after a five-minute instruction from a veteran employee. It took around a minute to paste protective film on one rear cover. The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important. This makes our job more slow paced than in departments that have begun mass production schedule," read a quote from a worker in the report.
Pegatron has been a long time manufacturing partner of Apple's, but has been overshadowed by the larger Foxconn. It was reported earlier this year the Apple was using Pegatron to produce its low-cost plastic iPhone.
The low-cost model could end up being labeled the iPhone 5C as packaging for a device of this name surfaced on the Internet earlier this week.
Apple is expected to unveil its new line of smartphones sometime this fall. The company will launch its next-generation model rumored to be the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 at the same time as this new iPhone 5C or iPhone 5 Color.
