iPhone 8 Release Date, Specs Rumors: Apple's Next Flagship to Feature Slightly Curved Edges

Apple's next flagship handset, the iPhone 8, will be released on the 10th anniversary of the tech giant's first-ever smartphone. According to previous reports, the iPhone 8 will sport a curved screen that resembles Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge handset. However, recent reports suggest that Apple is ditching this design to adopt gentler curves for the upcoming smartphone.

Japanese magazine Nikkei Asian Review recently revealed some details about the form of the curved organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen of the iPhone 8, as disclosed by a reliable source.

"While the curved screen will allow a viewable area of about 5.2 inches and make the iPhone even sleeker, it will not offer significant new functions, the person said," stated the publication.

After the release of the said article, an unofficial Apple blog named MacRumors was quick to confirm the rumors. According to the website, the display of the upcoming phone will be slightly curved at the edges below the 2.5D cover glass, so that means that its display cannot be dramatically curved.

In a patent filed by the tech giant in February, Apple sparked speculations that the next flagship will come with an edge-to-edge screen that will allow both the camera and the speaker to hide behind the display. The patent stated that a "full-face screen" makes it possible to place hardware in the inactive part of the display below the glass cover.

These reports automatically dismissed previous rumors that Apple will collaborate with Samsung and purchase a total of 75 million OLED panels from the South Korean tech giant for the iPhone 8.

Meanwhile, iPhone 8 is rumored to sport a 5.8-inch OLED display which will offer a clear and crisp resolution. As of this writing, Apple has not yet announced when the new flagship will be out so tech enthusiasts should stay tuned for more updates.
