Iran Submarines Added to Naval Fleet
Iran has added three more submarines to its naval fleet, according to Iranian state TV. Iranian Army Navy Commander Sayyari said on Saturday that the Ghadir-class vessels were built by experts in Iran and have been delivered to the Iranian navy in the southern port of Bandar Abbas.
"All parts of these submarines, including their body and their advanced radar equipment and defense systems have been designed and manufactured by our country's defense experts and with the help of the Defense Ministry," Sayyari said in a press conference.
The submarines will be an addition to Iran’s four Ghadir class submarines. The vessels are capable of firing missiles and torpedoes and operate in the Gulf’s shallow waters.
According to AP, the move is seen as part of Iran’s effort in upgrading its defense capabilities due to the rising tension with the West over its nuclear program.
