'Iron Man' Writers to Pen 'Men in Black' Spinoff; Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones Not Returning
Since the "Men in Black" spinoff was first announced, no salient details about it has been released yet. Recently, however, reports have emerged saying that Sony Pictures was already expediting the project so it could finally be released on May 17, 2019.
According to new reports, the studio has already tapped "Iron Man" writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum to come up with the script for the upcoming spinoff. While it was good news that the "Men in Black" are finally set to return, the bad news is that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will no longer return for the spinoff. This is because the upcoming film will reportedly break new grounds for a new franchise and is expected to star a fresh set of actors. Also, the project will not be the previously-promised crossover between the "Men in Black" franchise and "21 Jump Street."
It can be recalled that Sony initially planned to unite the "Men in Black" and "21 Jump Street" franchises to bring the two worlds together and come up with a hilarious, action-packed film. Recently, however, producer Walter F. Parkes said in an interview that the idea was already dead.

"It's so rare to get to the end of the script and know you're holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place," Parkes explained.
Produced by Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, the upcoming spinoff will reportedly take place within the same universe as the previous "Men in Black" films, only that it will feature a modern spin that will depict events on a more global scale. Steven Spielberg will act as executive producer.
The original "Men in Black" movie revolved around the experiences of two agents of a secret organization that protects the Earth from intergalactic baddies. The film spawned two sequels and collectively earned $1.7 billion globally.
