Jaden Smith Talks Father Will Smith's Advice, Romantic Relationships and Not Watching TV
Jaden Smith, the 14-year-old son of actors and producers Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, recently opened up about the best advice that he received from his famous father along with his reasons for not watching television, and his way of dealing with relationships.
Smith sat down with the.LIFE Files during one of his studio sessions recently where he was recording his upcoming mixtape. The budding film and music star told the website that although he was an entertainer, his parents have not allowed him to watch television since the age of 10.
"I watch like, Steve Jobs interviews, I don't really watch TV. I stopped watching TV when I turned like ten because my parents were like, 'TV's really bad for you,'" Smith recalled. "I'll watch movies I like to see, Steve Jobs interviews, something that's going to make me smart and then go to sleep. I always have to go to sleep with the TV on though."
The budding star expressed his disinterest in sitting through commercials while watching television and spoke about his preference of using his smart phone.
"I'm always watching something, I just don't like watching TV. I don't like being sold something every five minutes a commercial comes up. [...] We have iPhones now," the young Smith said. "If I want to see [what my family has] coming up I [would just] Google it."
While Smith has taken his parents advice to hold off on watching too much television, he also told the.LIFE Files about advice that he received from his 44-year-old actor father.
"My dad one time told me, he was like, 'The only time you should lie is when someone's holding a gun to your head and says 'Okay, lie or I'm going to shoot you.' And that really stuck with me," Smith said. "I think about that a lot. I used to not be really honest with girls and then I dropped a song called 'Starry Room' and then I started turning over a new leaf. Now, I'm completely honest with girls all the time and they just get mad at me."
After speaking about being honest with the opposite sex, Smith admitted that he had to learn to apply the rules of honesty in his private relationships.
"I had recently gotten out of a relationship so I made this song that was really heartfelt for me -- some of my best lyrics. Me and that girl's anniversary was gonna come up so I decided to drop it," Smith said before admitting that his relationship was short lived. "It was like a month-iversary. You know how teens are."
Smith is expecting to release his EP "The Cool Cafe" on Oct. 1.
