Jahi McMath Condition 'Improving' With Feeding, Breathing Tubes: Family Thanks God for Healing
Jahi McMath's family is thrilled that the 13-year-old is out of Children's Hospital Oakland and can now receive treatment they believe will lead to her healing. Jahi's family issued a statement praising God for her eventual recovery and the progress they believe she has made so far.
"Jahi had surgery this morning and it was successful!! Now I can kiss her lips without that damn tube in the way and now she can get nutrition!! Thank you Lord! My child will heal. I believe it," Nailah Winkfield, Jahi's mother, posted online.
Jahi was transferred from Children's Hospital to an undisclosed location where she received the necessary tracheotomy and feeding tube in order to allow her to breathe easier and receive vital nutrition. Her family has done all it can in order to provide for Jahi, including going to court in order to gain custody of Jahi so they could give her the treatment they believe she needs.
"Doctors are optimistic that her condition has stabilized and that her health is improving from when she was taken from Children's Hospital Oakland," a family spokesman told the press.
Jahi is still in a weakened state after not receiving nutritional treatment; Children's Hospital refused to insert a breathing or feeding tube after declaring Jahi brain dead nearly one month ago. They said they would not perform any operations or procedures on a dead body and wanted to turn off life support, but the family argued against that in court and eventually won custody of Jahi, leading to her receiving the breathing and feeding tubes.
"We are praying for a strong recovery!" Jahi's sister posted online.
"I always said there was very little hope she will recover but this family needed to be able to fight for this girl," attorney Christopher Dolan told the press. "The family made the decision. This case was about who decides what happens to a child, the parents or doctors."
