Jahi McMath Released From Hospital: 'She'll Now Be Treated Like the Precious Little Girl She Is'
Jahi McMath's family has won a seemingly endless battle to protect their daughter's life. After a month of struggling, Jahi's body was released to the custody of her mother, and she will likely now be transported to New York for long-term care.
After a judge ordered mediation between the McMath family and Children's Hospital Oakland, a decision was made that a death certificate would be issued by the coroner, but that Jahi's body would be released into the custody of her mother, who would be responsible for necessary care and transportation to a new facility.
"I was with her when she left the hospital and the family is very grateful for this day," Omari Sealey, Jahi's uncle, told the press. "We are pleased she is away from Children's Hospital which has been trying to pull the plug on my niece since December 12th. We fought and we fought to make sure she had a chance at recovery. She will now be treated like the precious little girl that she is."
Children's Hospital also issued a statement about the end of the ordeal.
"Our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation and we wish them closure and peace," a prepared statement said.
Jahi was transported to her mother's home while awaiting transport to a new facility, possibly New Beginnings Community Center in New York.
"We are aware of Jahi McMath's dire situation, and we are willing to open our outpatient facility to provide 24-hour care as an inpatient, long-term facility for Jahi with the required and appropriate medical staff that she depends upon," founder Allyson Scerri wrote to the court last week.
"Her brain needs time to heal. It's a new injury," Scerri later told CNN. "We believe in life after injury, all of us here at New Beginnings have first-hand experience because we have a loved one that was in the same situation as Jahi."
