Jake Gyllenhaal Beefs Up Then Gets Beaten Up in New 'Southpaw' Trailer (VIDEO)
Jake Gyllenhall appears in the upcoming sports drama "Southpaw" where he shows his new beefed up physique and gets beaten up badly in the recently released trailer.
Fresh from his "Nighcrawler" success, for which he was nominated for several awards, Jake Gyllenhaal has transformed his body over the past year to play a boxer whose life quickly spirals out of the control in the sports drama, "Southpaw."
Due out in theaters July 31, Gyllenhaal plays a hot heated character who gets beat up in the ring in a recent trailer released by The Weinstein Company.
From playing a gaunt, wiry and intense camera shooting anti-hero in "Nightcrawler," Gyllenhaal reportedly trained twice a day, seven days a week to develop a boxer's lean and muscle-bound form for his "Southpaw" role as light heavyweight boxer, Billy Hope.
"Jake is going to change how people see him," Director Antoine Fuqua, who also helmed "Training Day," told Yahoo UK in an interview.
The storyline immerses audiences into the life of an explosive fighter who battles for custody of his daughter after the tragedy of his wife's accidental shooting death rips his family apart.
The film stars Rachel McAdams as Billy Hope's wife, Maureen, Oscar winner Forest Whitaker as gym owner Titus "Tick" Wills, Naomie Harris as Angela Rivera, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as, Billy's manager, Tyrese Gibson and Rita Ora in as yet unannounced roles, and Oona Lawrence in what appears to be an award-winning performance as Billy's daughter, Leila.
Rapper Eminem, who was originally tapped to play the lead, will be providing the "Southpaw" soundtrack, with the screenplay penned by "Sons of Anarchy" actor Kurt Sutter.
The trailer shows Gyllenhaal in several particularly jarring and bloody fight scenes, where he takes a lot of punishment from his opponent in the ring, followed by drama sequences as he loses his wife, then tries to shape up his image and reputation to get his daughter back from social services.
