James Dobson's Broadcast Up for Radio Hall of Fame

The family-focused radio program of conservative Christian leader Dr. James Dobson has been nominated for induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

For more than 30 years, Dobson, founder and chairman of Colorado-based Focus on the Family ministry, has helped people worldwide raise their children, be better spouses, and tackled other issues concerning the Bible-based family.

His daily radio program has been nominated in the "national active" category along with Bob Costas, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, and Howard Stern. This is the first time Dobson's program has been up for the honor.

"It certainly is a rare occasion for the industry to pay attention to the work of Dr. Dobson," said John Fuller, co-host of the Focus broadcast, in a statement Thursday, "and to recognize the excellence with which he's gone about his broadcasting effort and the millions of people that have been reached worldwide throughout the 31-plus years of broadcast ministry."

Dr. Dobson's internationally syndicated radio program is heard daily on more than 3,000 radio stations across North America. It also airs in 27 languages in more than 160 countries.

Each year, the National Radio Hall of Fame Steering Committee, which includes radio executives, academicians, trade journalists and members of the National Association of Broadcasters, chooses nominees based on recommendations from the public.

To qualify, a broadcaster must have contributed to the radio industry on a national level for at least 10 years.

The National Radio Hall of Fame is the highest honor that an on-the-air personality can receive in the radio industry.

A new feature in this year's process is that for the first time citizens can vote for the nominated radio programs. Ballots will be collected online from May 1 to July 15. Winners will be announced on July 17.

The 2008 National Radio Hall of Fame induction ceremony and national broadcast will take place on November 8 in Chicago.
