Jamie Foxx Calls for Prayer, Sings 'No Weapon' at Trayvon Martin Vigil
Jamie Foxx, the Academy Award-winning actor and singer, recently spoke at the New York vigil for slain teenager Trayvon Martin. He called for the prayers of the boy's parents and serenaded them with a gospel song.
Foxx, the 45-year-old singer-songwriter, spoke through a megaphone to Martin's parents Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton in New York City's Union Square Park on Tuesday. The actor's appearance took place on the 1-year anniversary of the death of 17-year-old Martin, who was shot and killed by George Zimmerman near his aunt's home in a Sanford, Fla. gated community.
Foxx commended the slain teenager's parents for the way they have handled his death. The New York City crowd lit candles and held a moment of silence at the time of Martin's death at the hands of Zimmerman, a self-proclaimed neighborhood watchman, at 7:17 p.m. on Feb. 26.
"I want people to know that this is a personal thing. And I want to thank Sybrina for being so strong because in the midst of all of the swirling and all of the talking points and people standing on both sides, you stood on the side of being a mother," Foxx told Martin's parents. "Tracy you stood on the side of being a father. You didn't talk about color which I thought was absolutely amazing. I looked at all of the different telecasts that you've done and you never brought that up."
While Foxx called for Zimmerman to be tried in a court system, he also asked spectators to pray for the family.
"Please everyone out there all over the world, keep in your prayers this family because it's tough for them because they have to grieve in front of you," Foxx told Martin's parents. "That's a tough thing to do with the cameras constantly on you."
Foxx hugged the family after singing a line from well known gospel song "No Weapon."
"I want to let you know that we love you, we're not going to leave you and 'no weapon formed against you shall prosper,'" Foxx sang to the family.
Angela Corey,a Jacksonville, Fla. prosecutor, filed second-degree murder charges against Zimmerman after Martin's shooting. While Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the charges amid claims of self defense, his trial for the death of Martin is scheduled to begin in June.
