'Jane the Virgin' Fans Left in Shock at Surprising Death During LSAT Exam

This week was not a particularly good one for "Jane the Virgin" fans as they watched one of the most important characters die.

However lovely the story of Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Michael (Brett Dier) has been, happy endings are not for everyone. On Monday night's episode, Michael suddenly dropped dead to the ground just as he was about to take his Law School Admission Test. Jane is then seen dropping her phone after learning about the tragic news.

As many fans know, the show was built around the loving relationship between Jane and Michael. As the show progressed, their relationship was subjected to many challenges and threats but the two ended up saying their vows at the altar.

At the night of their wedding, Michael was shot in the chest by Sin Rostro (Bridget Regan), who had been in disguise as Michael's work partner Susanna (Megan Ketch). While Michael survived that incident, fans had no idea that it would still take a toll on him and would eventually take his life.

This season, after surviving the fatal shot, Jane and Michael continued their lovely story as they moved into their own home as newlyweds and made a major leap for Jane and their relationship as they made love for the first time ever.

Showrunner Explained Michael's Death

The death of Michael was exceptionally painful for the fans, the actors and the crew of "Jane the Virgin" that showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman had to write an open letter to address the questions and reactions of fans about the shocking twist.

Through the show's official blog site, Urman started her letter by expressing how "magical" Dier's portrayal of Michael had been, admitting "most of our writers' room became #teammichael by the end of the first season."

Urman candidly said that Jane and Michael together had simply been magic, adding, "I honestly don't think I'll ever love a moment on our show as much as I loved Michael's vows to Jane."

The showrunner admitted that there had been a plan for Michael to die earlier on in the show but she explained: "Brett is such an incredible actor – he gave us such great comedy and drama and first-rate exposition delivery ... So, we changed some things in the writers' room. Jane and Michael got married. They had sex. They moved into their first home. ... I'm so glad all those firsts for Jane were with Michael."

There was also an emphasis given to the narrator's line as Michael died on screen. Knowing that it would be painful for everyone to see Michael go, Urman felt the need to prepare fans with the truth by reminding them that Michael had never stopped loving Jane as the narrator said, "For as long as Michael lived, until he drew his very last breath, he never did."

Next Episode is Set Three Years After Michael's Death

In the same open letter, Urman left fans with a major spoiler, saying that the next episode will pick off three years since Michael's death, knowing that the on-screen grief will definitely "overwhelm our story telling."

As per TV Guide's "Jane the Virgin" next episode synopsis, the titular character is expected to go on living her life as she hears about an opportunity for emerging writers while she and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) try to address their son's behavioral issues.

Fans can watch Jane and the rest of the characters deal with Michael's loss three years after in the next episode, which will be aired on Monday, Feb. 13, at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
