Jason Castro: I'm a Christian in Whatever I Do
Jason Castro's transition from the mainstream music market to the Christian one was a choice that just happened, he says. His newest album, Who Am I, is hitting all the Christian radio stations and stores this week.
Regardless of his first album being mainstream, Castro told The Christian Post that he is a Christian and that affects everything he does.
"As I was out on the road, it wasn't like God wasn't on my mind. God is definitely the central part of my life," he said. "As I was on the road supporting this album, it just became such a hectic schedule. It was really sucking the life out of me."

Castro hadn't planned on making his next album a Christian one, but the songs he wrote expressed a time in his life when he had a yearning for God.
"I was so tired all the time, I didn't even have the energy to reach out to God, and I started having this longing for more God in my life," he explained. "And I wanted more God in my music. Everyday, I can count on connecting with him there."
Like Castro, other famous bands and artists such as Switchfoot or U2's Bono have steered clear of classifying themselves in the "Christian" genre. The artists are careful not to place themselves in a box, where only believers will seek their music. Castro targets both believers and non-believers with his music. But he noted that he had so many churches and Christian groups that were loyal fans that he wanted to create something specifically for them.
Still, Castro is careful not to narrow his identity to a "Christian artist," but rather an artist who happens to be Christian.
"I'm a Christian in whatever I do. I am an artist, I am a songwriter and I classify myself as a singer/songwriter. I am a Christian and when I write my songs, I write about God, and everything He's done for me. Every song in some way is led by what I believe," he commented.
His self-titled debut album earlier this year wasn't a Christian one, but he said he just wanted to be a source of positivity in the mainstream world. He quoted, Phillipians 4:8: "Finally, brothers and sisters whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things."
As Castro continues in music career his plans, he said, are in God's hands. He has no intentions of only being a Christian artist, nor does he have plans of only being a mainstream one.
"I just want to go wherever God leads. I can't say where that is. It's whatever doors He opens and whatever doors He closes. It's just a journey of faith."
