Jason Collins Talks Calling Wedding Off to Ex-Fiance, WNBA Player Left 'Emotional'
Jason Collins, the NBA veteran who recently announced he was gay, is speaking about calling off his wedding to former WNBA player Carolyn Moos, who admits that she is going through an emotional time after learning about his homosexual tendencies.
Moos, 34, was with Collins for seven years and planned to marry the 34-year-old Washington Wizards center before he called off their wedding in 2009. Moos said she had no idea Collins was gay and that her former fiance gave her unspecified reasons for wanting to call their union quits, TMZ reported.
However, Collins let his ex-fiance know that he planned to publicly announce his homosexuality last week, and confessed that his homosexuality caused him to split from her four years ago. Moos admitted that the announcement was hard to take in, according to TMZ.
"It's very emotional for me as a woman. To have invested 8 years in my dream to have a husband, soul mate, and best friend in him. So this is all hard to understand," Moos said in a TMZ report. "I care about [Jason] tremendously and only want the best for him. I want Jason to be happy for a lifetime and stay true to who he really is, inside and out."
Collins,34, recently spoke about his thought process concerning breaking things off with Moos on "Good Morning America."
"Calling off the wedding was obviously a tough decision, but it was the right one because I knew I wasn't getting married for the right reasons," the NBA veteran admitted.
He told the morning talk show that his twin brother and former NBA star Jarron Collins didn't even know about his homosexuality until recently.
"(My) twin brother ... I'm eight minutes older, yeah. He didn't know," Collins revealed on GMA. "I am really good at playing it straight."
While Collins admits that he is now happy after revealing his tendencies, high-profile supporters like former president Bill Clinton, comedian Ellen DeGeneres and NBA star Kobe Bryant have openly supported him. Still, members of the Christian community like ESPN analyst Chris Broussard and preacher John Piper have spoken out against Collins' claims of being a Christian and promoting his homosexuality.
