Jaycee Dugard's Stepfather Describes Anguish in Witnessing Her Kidnapping

Jaycee Dugard’s stepfather has revealed his heartache at watching helplessly as the 11-year-old girl was kidnapped so many years ago. He has opened up to tell how he still has not seen her since she was rescued two years ago as the family continues to hold him partly responsible for the abduction.

Carl Probyn has told of his anguish at seeing his stepdaughter being abducted by Phillip and Nancy Garrido as she made her way to a school bus stop one morning. Probyn was just meters away when the tragic event took place in 1991; he had dropped her off near the school bus stop but could do nothing as moments later Phillip Garrido shot her with a stun gun and dragged her into his car.

Probyn has explained how he frantically chased after the car on his bicycle, but was unable to keep up as the kidnappers sped away. That was to be the last time anyone saw her for the next 18 years.

Initially, some suspected that Probyn had a hand in Dugard’s kidnapping; accusations that have since been proved false. Jaycee Dugard’s mother split-up with Probyn four years after the incident, and he tells how she could never forgive him for not doing more on that fateful day.

Probyn said, “I feel very happy that Jaycee is living her life... But I have to say that right now, I don't think the odds are very good that I will ever see her again,” according to British newspaper The Daily Mirror.

He added: “Looking back, maybe I regret I did not give her more hugs.

“Terry's family thought I was mean to her. I think they thought I was the reason Jaycee did not run away from the Garridos. But I can tell you now, I really cared for that girl.”

Jaycee Dugard released her memoir earlier this week, which gives detailed insight to her time in captivity. A Stolen Life sold 175,000 copies on its opening day and went straight to the top of the Amazon bestsellers list.

Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 431 years in prison, and his wife, Nancy Garrido, to 36 years in prison for the abduction of Jaycee Dugard.

Jaycee Dugard now lives in California with her mother, and her two daughters aged 17 and 13. Her first daughter was conceived when she was just 14-years-old. She still allegedly calls Phillip Garrido their “dad,” simply explaining “he is what he is.”
