Jeremy Lin Injury Update: Team Confirms Point Guard Cannot Return This Season
Jeremy Lin will unfortunately exit the season much earlier than he and the Brooklyn Nets want due to another knee injury.
Lin and the Brooklyn Nets faced the Indiana Pacers in an away-from-home opener on Wednesday evening where the latter team won, 140-131. Shortly before the game ended, Lin went for the basket and was challenged by two opponents. He then had a bad landing and immediately reached for his knee.
On the same night, the team confirmed that Lin's bad fall had caused a ruptured patella tendon on his right knee.
Fans of Lin and the Brooklyn Nets will recall that the player was also out for the most part of the NBA's 2016-17 season due to a persistent knee injury. Unfortunately, the team also confirmed that after further evaluation of the player's condition, he will not be able to return for the current season.
Lin's immediate reaction to the incident was an emotional one and gave fans a hunch that the player could be facing another season-ending injury. This was confirmed by the team following a Thursday evening evaluation of his injured knee.
In a statement, Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks said: "Jeremy worked tremendously hard during the offseason and in training camp and was excited for the prospects of the team this season."
"We feel awful that the injury will cost him the season, however our entire organization will be there to support Jeremy in every way possible throughout his recovery. Jeremy remains an important part of this team and will continue to contribute in a leadership role," Marks added.
With Lin leaving the season, Brooklyn Nets is expected to give D'Angelo Russell the first point guard position. Despite losing their first game this week, Russell was able to score 30 points.
Lin's injury happened a day after Gordon Hayward badly hurt his ankle in his first game with the Boston Celtics and against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Like Lin, Hayward was also forced to leave the season early to undergo surgery and recover.
