Jim Carrey 'Kick-Ass 2' Violence: Actor Condemns Actions, Creator Issues Statement
Jim Carrey stars in the upcoming "Kick-Ass 2" and recently issued an apology for appearing in the film, setting off a fury of response to the actor's comment.
"I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence," Carrey tweeted. My apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart."
"Kick-Ass 2" features Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes, one of the many superheroes in the film. He joins title character Kick-Ass to take on a supervillain and his army. Filming began before the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Conn., and Carrey issued a very apologetic statement for his participation in the movie.
Creator Mark Millar issued a statement in response to Carrey's tweets.
"As you may know, Jim is a passionate advocate of gun-control and I respect both his politics and his opinion, but I'm baffled by this sudden announcement as nothing seen in this picture wasn't in the screenplay 18 months ago," Millar posted on Milllarworld forum.
"Ironically, Jim's character in 'Kick-Ass 2' is a Born-Again Christian, and the big deal we made of the fact that he refuses to fire a gun is something he told us attracted him to the role in the first place," Millar added.
Fans have reacted with both disdain and support for Carrey's comments, showing the continuing disagreement on violence in films.
"Very brave to come out with that," tweeted Timothy Dougherty. "I hope you get that support from the film industry, most are good understanding people."
"It's a movie," argued Josh Eppard. "A fun, violent movie. If there was no violence on TV there might b more in real life!"
"Kick-Ass 2" is expected to be released on Aug. 16 of this year, and it remains to be seen whether Carrey's words will have any impact on audiences.
