Jim Marshall Dies at the Age of 88

Jim Marshall, who is widely considered to be one of the foremost pioneering people in the development of rock music's sound, has died at the age of 88.

Marshall was known for his work with amplifiers; his improvements to the sound that rock music fans crave earned him the nickname the "Lord of Loud."

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved founder and leader for the past 50 years, Jim Marshall," Marshall's company said in a statement posted on their website.

"While mourning the Guv'nor though, we also salute a legendary man who led a full and truly remarkable life," the statement continued.

Marshall had been battling cancer and experienced several strokes, his son, Terry Marshall, said.

"My wife and I were with him when he passed away," his son said. "He got cancer toward the end of last year, and had surgery for that, and it came back. He was in a terrible state the last five or six weeks. He's in a much better place now."

Legends in rock music showed their support by posting messages on Twitter.

"The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening," former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash said in a message on Twitter. He continued: "R & R will never be the same w/out him. But, his amps will live on FOREVER!"

Marshall's company also wrote a tribute on their website.

"Your memory, the music and joy your amps have brought to countless millions for the past five decades and that world-famous, omnipresent script logo that proudly bears your name will always live on," they stated.

Marshall was born in London in 1923 and founded Marshall Amplification in 1962. He began making guitar amplifiers in Britain as a more affordable option to U.S. made amplifiers. Marshall attracted the biggest names in music include Les Paul, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.
