Jimi Hendrix Anniversary of Death: An Icon 42 Years After Passing (VIDEO)

It has officially been 42 years since electric guitarist Jimi Hendrix passed away at the early age of 27.

Despite the fact that it has been more than four decades since the iconic guitar player passed, Hendrix still amasses a large number of fans. Hendrix' fan base and legend, given his mainstream career that lasted only four short years, remains an incredible feat.

But 42 years after his death, some still question the details behind the tragic loss of one who is considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in music history. On November 14, 1991 Hendrix's name was honored with a star on Hollywood Boulevard. He passed in 1970 at the age of 27, an age which has become known as cursed.

Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones and Kurt Cobain all also died at the age of 27 prompting some to even develop the "27 Club," dedicated to the iconic musicians who passed at that age.

However, despite the odd coincidence, researchers have dispelled the rumor with a study that proves the curse is just a myth. Authors from the British Medical Journal compared the deaths of 1,046 famous musicians with data from the general U.K. population.

Mathematical analysis showed no peak in the risk of death at age 27, however musicians in their 20s and 30s were two to three times more likely to die prematurely than people in the general population.

Psychotherapist Stephanie Sarkis, PhD, explained the "curse of 27" as a psychological phenomenon to the Huffington Post.

"When there is a tragic death, such as that of a famous young person, we tend to look for a reason why it happened … we try to find a common thread, in order to make sense of it all," she said.

She attributes the death of young musicians to drug use, the increased likelihood of private plane crashes, and their higher ranked fame at a young age.
