John Cena's Best Opening Monologue Jokes at the 2016 ESPY Awards and an Overview of How Wrestling Became His Career [VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

John Cena Shares How Wrestling Became His Career and How He Hosted the Most Important Night in the Sports Industry.

John Cena is arguably at the apex of his career and yesterday he hosted the 2016 and 24th ESPY Awards. The WWE superstar said that his wrestling career started because of a conversation he had with a kid while doing his shift at a gym. After that, he hit it big time.

How His Career Began

The man behind the famous "You Can't See Me" tagline is not leaving the ring anytime soon. ABC News did an interview with the 39-year-old superstar last Tuesday, and he shared his memory of the paths he took in order to become a wrestling icon. He shared that it wasn't his intention to make wrestling his career, and the idea presented itself in the form of a kid.

At age 21, he moved to Santa Monica with just an army duffel bag and 500 bucks. He started working to get him by, and then he tried to be a cop and took the California Highway Patrol exam but didn't pass. His next option was the Marines, but he had this conversation with a kid that made him decide to become a wrestler. "I was already up to my eyeballs in debt, but I leveraged every credit card I had, paid a promoter and learned the trade," he said.

"Had we never had that conversation, I would have probably been honorably discharged or medically discharged from the Marines," he added. He said that everyone was asking when he'll get out of wresting and just do movies and told them that he's not quitting wresting nor will he stop making movies. Cena said he wants to do both. "I'm going to do this as long as I physically can," he said. "There's a definitive end in sight but I'm gonna milk it for all that it's worth," he added.

ESPY Awards Night

Cena hosted the "biggest night" in the sports industry and was honest enough to admit that he has no idea how to host the prestigious show and trusted the writing team to do what they do best and bring success together. He also wants to be criticized by it. "I wanna be tagged on the chin, I wanna be tagged on the nose, no pun intended, because I'm going to tag them. You say whatever you want just remember, I'm coming for you," he said in a playful and fun way.

Thus, he did. He started the show by telling his audience why he's hosting tonight instead of someone like "Central Intelligence" star, Kevin Hart. Tim Duncan's retirement, Peyton Manning's love story and Odell Beckham's look weren't spared from Cena's comedic criticism. Then he drew the conclusion that, "Maybe on the night when sport meets entertainment, they got the perfect host."
