Jon Jones News: UFC President Dana White Expects Former Light Heavyweight King to Make The Jump to Heavyweight
UFC president Dana White believes that former long-time light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will eventually make the move up to the heavyweight division.
The 28-year old Jones has been reinstated back to the UFC last month, after serving an indefinite suspension for a hit-and-run accident he was involved in last April. He was also subsequently stripped of his title, which former opponent Daniel Cormier now holds.
Since being let back in the company, "Bones" had also been shaping himself for a dominant return that will help bring the title he once held back to his waist. As of late, his social media posts are mainly photos of himself looking bulkier at the moment; compared to the leaner and lankier frame he had during the last four years he was champion.
This led company executive Dana White to believe that Jones may have the intention of moving up in weight and fighting with the other heavyweights.
"He'll still be a light heavyweight, but he's planning on making that move to heavyweight," White said in a report by MMA Fighting. "He definitely is. Jones looks awesome. He's one of those freakish kind of athletes, he might be the best who's ever done it."
Jones' fighting resumé in the UFC alone does speak for itself. If not for a disqualification loss against Matt Hamill in his third UFC fight in 2009, "Bones" would have held an undefeated mixed martial arts record (21-1, with 15 victories by stoppage).
He has also faced the "Who's Who" in the game, mostly former champions such as Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Lyoto Machida, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Vitor Belfort, and Rashad Evans, among others.
In his recent tell-all interview with veteran journalist Ariel Helwani, Jones said he is open to coming up in weight, adding he believes he can stand and bang with the sport's bigger fighters.
"I actually think I'm physically stronger than a lot of them right now, and my skills speaks for themselves," Jones said.
