Joran van der Sloot's Girlfriend Pregnant, Baby Conceived in Prison
A recent report from a Dutch newspaper has indicated that Joran van der Sloot claimed that he got a woman pregnant while he was behind bars for murder.
The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf revealed that Van der Sloot's lawyer Maximo Altez stated that the woman is past the third month of the pregnancy and that Van der Sloot has confirmed the reports himself.
Van der Sloot, who is serving a 28-year prison sentence for killing a young Peruvian woman, impregnated the woman during an unsupervised visit.
It is not currently known if the woman, who has been identified only as "Leidi," broke any prison rules during the visit and if she will face any charges as a result.
In the report by De Telegraaf Van der Sloot explained that "Leidi" had used the pill form of birth control, but might have forgotten to take it. He insisted that because of her Catholic faith, she would not get an abortion.
Van der Sloot also revealed that he does not have any DNA evidence to prove that he is the father, but he believes that the child is his.
Local reports from Peru last year stated that a woman named Leydi Figueroa Uceda was Van der Sloot's girlfriend and that the couple had conceived a child together, according to the Associated Press.
In 2010, Van der Sloot was charged for robbing and killing Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel room after the pair met in a casino. He is also wanted by U.S. authorities after he allegedly tried to extort money from the family of Natalee Holloway, who disappeared in 2005, when he stated that he knew where her body was. Van der Sloot was the last person to see Holloway alive.
Van der Sloot could be granted Peruvian nationality if it is proven that he is the father of the woman's child, which would block extradition attempts by the United States.
