'Jurassic World 2' Spoilers: Sequel To Be 'A Different Kind of Film,' Claire Dearing May Be Main Protagonist

Following the phenomenal success of "Jurassic World," which grossed over $1.5 billion overseas and became the highest-grossing film of 2015, it came as no surprise to fans of the "Jurassic Park" series when Universal Pictures announced a sequel scheduled for release in 2018.

Since then, fans have been scouring the Internet for details on the sequel which, according to "Jurassic World" director Colin Trevorrow, won't actually be called "Jurassic World 2." According to the director, the sequel will "get to be a different kind of film." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Trevorrow said, "I feel like the audience has given us permission, to a certain extent, to take this to the next level."

"The next level" doesn't necessarily mean scale, according to Trevorrow, who said that, in his opinion, the sequel does not need to be about bigger or better dinosaurs. Instead, the "Jurassic World" helmer said, "It's about using this as a starting point for a much larger story about our relationship with these animals, and with animals in general, and the dynamic created by bringing them back to life."

Trevorrow also revealed that he and "Jurassic World" screenwriter Derek Connolly used a line from an earlier "Jurassic Park" film as inspiration for the as-yet-untitled sequel. The line, spoken by paleontologist Alan Grant (played by Sam Neill) goes (as Trevorrow paraphrased): "Dinosaurs and man, separated by 65 million years of evolution, have been thrown back into the mix together. How can we know what to expect?"

Speaking of expectations, fans have also honed in on another Trevorrow statement for clues into the plot of the forthcoming sequel. Rumor has it that Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), the sophisticated operations manager who discovered her inner daring heroine in "Jurassic World," may be taking over the lead from Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), the rough-and-tumble Velociraptor trainer.

In a Jurassic Cast Podcast, Trevorrow said that Claire is the character who evolves the most over the course of the movies and that it is Claire's story that reflects the changing world. Many have taken this to mean that the "Jurassic World" sequel will have Claire as the main act and have Owen in a supporting role.

The sequel to "Jurassic World" is set to hit theaters on June 22, 2018.
