One application theme becoming increasingly popular on the iPhone, especially as the Christmas holiday season draws near, is the sending of postcards. These are apps that transform photos from your phone into postcards, real or virtual, that can be sent to family and friends.

This application has become so habit forming that Gomez, the "Wizard of Waverly Place" actress, and girlfriend of singing star Justin Bieber, recently tweeted: "Ummm im obsessed with the app Postcards on the Run!! I've been sending them like crazy lol."

These apps are perfect for travelers, who can take their "look where I am" snapshots and create their own personalized postcard, which can be emailed independently of stamps or even the post office.

There are free apps, such as Current Postcards, which allow users to create and send photo postcards or regular greeting cards from an Apple device. It allows users to include greeting text as well as colorful themes. There is also the SodaSnap app, which turns any photo on an iPhone or iPod Touch into an electronic postcard that can be shared with friends.

There are also apps, like Postman and Postcard Express, that charge a fee and but offers more choice of colors and fonts to attach to an image. Postcard Express's features work on iPhones running OS 3.0 and late operating systems. Whichever apps one chooses, these options will definitely help in avoiding the card shops and lines and allow for a little more creativity during these festive months.
