Kanye West Says Pusha T's New Album Reminds Him of Hell
Pusha T, a rapper signed to Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music record label, was recently told that his album reminded the label head of Satan's domain.
After West listened to material from the upcoming solo album of Pusha T, born Terrence Thorton, he described the reaction that he received in an MTV interview.
"When it was over, he says, 'Yo, you know that if you die and hear your music, you know you ended up in hell, right?' " Pusha recalled. "I don't know how to take that. Is that a good thing to say or a bad thing to say?"
However, the rapper admitted that his upcoming album was inspired by the 1997 film "The Devil's Advocate" starring Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. Pusha described how the movie reflected his album material.
"'Devil's Advocate' is a very dark movie, but at the same time, visually, it's beautiful," the rapper told MTV. "The album is based off of that because I speak about the harsh realities of street life but there's a lot of glitz and glamor that comes along with that. If you just look at it at face value, you might think, 'It sounds a bit like he's glorifying [street life],' but when you get tuned into the record, you realize that you get both sides of it."
Although West compared the rapper's album to hell, he seemed to be impressed with the effort.
"He was like...you painted some hell of a picture in this joint,' " Pusha said. "I was like, 'Well I guess the streets will be happy.' "
The rapper is known for including spiritual messages in his music, which is evident in a recent single titled "Exodus 23:1." While Pusha's brother, No Malice, once formed a rap duo known as the "Clipse" with the rapper, he decided to put rhyming on hold to pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ.
While No Malice has yet to pursue his own solo album, he was recently featured on Christian rapper Lecrae's mixtape "Church Clothes" in a song called "Darkest Hour." While the Clipse have collectively released four albums, Pusha's upcoming untitled effort will be his firt solo studio album.
