Leavitt attended St. Anselm College, a private Benedictine liberal arts college in New Hampshire, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in communications and political science in 2019. She obtained a scholarship to play NCAA Division II college softball, and penned op-eds in the school newspaper defending the Trump administration.
Neil Levesque, the director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, said Leavitt will be a "great fit" for the job, according to the Portsmouth Herald.

"She was a fantastic student, very smart, very capable and very optimistic," Levesque said. "Certainly there's a lot of focus on her age, but the truth is that I think the most remarkable part about this is that she's really that good. She's just very talented in answering questions and communicating the president-elect's message."
While at St. Anselm, Leavitt interned at Fox News and the White House during the first Trump administration, working as a presidential writer and assistant press secretary under then-White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany.
According to The Eagle Tribune, Leavitt worked her way up to her position in the White House after applying for an internship as a writer in the presidential correspondence office when she was a junior. She started out writing "thank you" notes and letters to the public on Trump's behalf, and later was offered a job.
