Kate Middleton Craves Carbs During Pregnancy
Kate Middleton, who is expecting her first child with Prince William, has reportedly acquired new eating habits since her pregnancy began.
Although she is under 12 weeks along, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were forced to announce that they are expecting after the Duchess required medical treatment last month.
Middleton was diagnosed with Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), or acute morning sickness, which can include nausea and excessive vomiting during pregnancy. The rare condition makes it almost impossible to eat or drink.
Due to her condition, it is possible that her usual palate has changed while pregnant.
According to an insider, the Duchess has a new penchant for lavender shortbread.
"A lot of women develop cravings during pregnancy and Kate is no exception," a source told The Sun. "She has got a real taste for these biscuits."
The unusual sweet treat combines the buttery cookie with the aromatic herb, resulting in one of today's most posh desserts. Furthermore, lavender is believed to lend pregnant women relief from morning sickness, making it a perfect snack for the Duchess.
"Lavender is said to have healing properties, so it is not such a wacky food to nibble on when you're pregnant," added the insider.
Additionally, it has been reported that Middleton enjoys the traditional English afternoon tea staple of scones while pregnant.
"Kate has been craving scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream," said another source close to the Duchess, according to OMG! Yahoo News.
"She can't get enough of it," the insider added of the soft, buttery spread made from whipping cream. "And she washed it down with a cup of old-fashioned English-breakfast tea."
The insider also noted Middleton's battle with morning sickness.
"Some women eat raw onions when they're pregnant," the source added. "But Kate's joked that she's keeping it classy. It's just a shame she can't keep her food down for long!"
Meanwhile, experts say that HG is typically resolved by 21 weeks into a pregnancy.
The Duchess was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital of the potential dangers of dehydration and malnutrition in December where she was on an IV drip at the time, reported the Daily Mail.
Today, the mom-to-be seems to be feeling better.
A statement on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's website indicated that the couple as well as their entire family are "delighted with the news" of the baby on the way.
Both 30 years old, the royal couple has been at the center of pregnancy rumors ever since their marriage on April 29, 2011.
