Katie Couric: Barbara Walters' Replacement on 'The View?'

Katie Couric could possibly be filling in for Barbara Walters on "The View" following the 83-year-old's retirement next year.

Reports arose Friday that suggested Couric's talk show "Katie" is likely headed for cancelation this winter.

However, the 56-year-old journalist may already have a new television spot lined up.

Earlier this year, Walters announced that the end of her 52-year-long career would occur in May 2014, marking the end of her co-hosting duties on ABC's "The View."

On Friday, television insiders revealed that Couric is in talks about a place on the famous talk show following Walters' retirement.

"Katie may ultimately replace Barbara when she retires," said a source at the New York Daily News.

Adding fuel to the rumors, "Katie" has failed to garner impressive ratings and canceling the show could leave Couric open to a new position.

"Execs are so concerned about publicly humiliating Katie by canceling her show in the middle of the second season that they want to put her on 'The View' this year to slide into Barbara's chair," the insider at the NY Daily News continued.

As for Walters' upcoming retirement, the journalist is "very happy with [her] decision," she said in a statement.

"And I look forward to a wonderful and special year ahead," the "ABC News" staple added.

Walters also noted that her retirement will be full of relaxation.

"I do not want to appear on another program or climb another mountain," the news veteran explained. "I want instead to sit on a sunny field and admire the very gifted women- and, okay, some men, too- who will be taking my place."

However, Walters will remain an executive producer of "The View," which she created in 1997.

Meanwhile, Jenny McCarthy is the latest addition to the talk show, and made her official debut as a co-host last week.

"I'm beyond thrilled," said the comedian-actress in a statement at the time her post on "The View" was confirmed. "I look forward to helping make hot topics a little bit hotter, and showing my mom that my interrupting skills have finally paid off."
