Katie Holmes Says She Doesn't Want Marriage to Tom Cruise to Define Her, Talks About Being A Mom

It's been two years since Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise called it quits, and now, the actress is opening up about her new life and being a mother to their 8-year old daughter, Suri.

Back in the 1990s, the actress made a name for herself as she starred in the hit TV show "Dawson's Creek" as the beautiful Joey Potter, and in movies such as "Varsity Blues." However, Holmes was really thrust into the spotlight when she married Tom Cruise. Prior to their marriage, the two have been very open about their relationship and fans witnessed their courtship and knew many details about their fairy tale wedding. Though Holmes knows that her marriage to one of the Hollywood's top leading men made an impact on the public, she hopes that people will see that there's more to her than that alone.

"I don't want that moment of my life to define me, to be who I am," said Holmes in an interview with People Magazine. "I don't want that to be what I'm known as. I was an actor before, an actor during and an actor now."

Holmes, who appeared in the dystopian drama "The Giver" this year, is set to reprise her role as Jackie Kennedy in Reelz Channel's "The Kennedys: After Camelot." Her latest film, "Miss Meadows" will be out on Nov. 14, and she is also about to embark on a new project wherein she will make her directorial debut.

Despite her busy schedule, being a mother to Suri is the still the actress's top priority. Since her divorce from Cruise in 2012, Holmes has custody of her daughter and the two reside in New York City.

Of being a single parent, Holmes said, "I'm learning every day, and I have been since the minute I became a mom. My patience has grown, but between 4 and 6pm … I mean, wow. Between tickle fights and glitter art, I try to throw in some manners along the way."
