Katy Perry Biopic: Singer Turned Actress?
Reports have indicated that Katy Perry may appear in Harvey Weinstein's movie about British opera singer Paul Potts.
Weinstein asked the 27-year-old singer to appear in the Billy Elliot-style biopic while attending an Oscars party this year, according to New York Daily News.
The producer behind "The Artist" ran into Perry at Elton John's Oscar viewing party and suggested working together.
"I was talking to Katy about a new project, a possible dramatic role in the Paul Potts movie, which will be shooting in England soon," said Weinstein to NY Post.
The producer continued to explain they he is also eying other singers for the role.
"We'd really like someone like Katy or Adele to play the role of Pott's wife, and Katy seemed genuinely interested," said Weinstein.
According to the producer, Perry replied to the suggestion by saying, "I love a challenge."
The Weinstein Company's in-development Paul Potts project tells the story of the cell phone salesman who grew to fame after appearing on Simon Cowell's "Britain's Got Talent" in 2007. Potts, an ardent opera fan and singer, won him the grand prize on the reality show and introduced him to a successful music career.
Potts has since performed for Queen Elizabeth and recorded the album "One Chance." In 2009 experts estimated him to be worth about $8 million.
Perry would portray Potts' wife, Julie-Ann Cooper, whom he credits for standing by him as he pursued his music career.
Perry has kept herself busy with her music career since news of her divorce from British comedian Russell Brand broke in December. The "California Gurlz" singer recently collaborated with Electric Arts (EA) on a special Katy Perry character in the game The Sims.
Perry's character will lend her "distinctive talents, style, and personality" to the popular computer game, said EA.
The California native is also reportedly working on a new album.
