Katy Perry Equals Michael Jackson No. 1's Record

Katy Perry has tied the record with Michael Jackson for the number of Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles from a single album. Jackson’s 1987 album “Bad” and Perry’s “Teenage Dream” both had an impressive five singles reach the number one spot on the charts.

“Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” scored Perry her fifth hit single off of the album “Teenage Dream.” The momentous event makes Perry the first female to score five singles from one album.

She is also the only living artist with the record.

Perry reacted to the record-breaking news on her Twitter account Wednesday, writing, “What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song ‘LAST FRIDAY NIGHT’ is officially #1 & made HISTORY!”

“&U know, I couldn’t have done it with out ya, really I owe you guys BIG… so take this moment to give yourself a high FIVE!! #allbeacauseofu,” Perry added later.

Perry’s number one singles before “Last Friday Night” include “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” Firework”, and “E.T.” which featured Kanye West.

The feat was previously accomplished by Jackson with his hit singles from 1987 and 1988: “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Bad,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “Man in the Mirror,” and lastly, “Dirty Diana,” from the late artist’s album “Bad.”

Perry has maintained the number one position with her hit singles for a cumulative 18 weeks, while Jackson spent a total of seven weeks at the top during the reign of his five singles.

Katy Perry could be receiving even more recognition for her successful album this month. The “California Gurls” singer dominated this year’s nominations for MTV’s Video Music Awards, with a total of nine.

Up for Video of the Year, Best Female Voice, and Best Pop Video, among others, Perry wrote “I can’t sleep… I’m so excited… It feels like every birthday/Christmas/first kiss I ever had,” about her nominations.

MTV's 2011 VMA winners will be announced live on air August 28.
