Katy Perry, John Mayer 'Fighting' Before Split: Was He 'Using' Her?
Katy Perry and John Mayer were reportedly fighting a lot in the weeks leading up to their recent split and a new report claims that the pop singer grew weary about his motives.
On Wednesday, sources confirmed that after less than one year of dating the couple had called it quits and new reports allegedly offers an insight into what exactly went wrong in their short-lived romance.
"He's very defensive and comes across as extremely jealous of her career," a source linked to Perry reportedly told People magazine.
"He's basically using Katy, who fits into his plan to stay in the spotlight right now," the People source said of Mayer, who has been recovering from vocal granuloma surgeries and retreating to Montana while on vocal rest for the past year.
Mayer, 35, began dating Perry, 28, in July 2012 and the singer reportedly helped her overcome the emotional challenges of her 2011 divorce from actor Russell Brand. Despite his support, Mayer allegedly began posing similar problems for Perry that she faced during her marriage to Brand.
"I started to realize . . . that fairy tale that I had is not true for me right now," Perry confessed in her concert movie "Katy Perry: Part of Me."
The pop icon described her partner as being someone who "won't be threatened or have weird motives," which appears to have been the main cause of friction in her marriage to Brand. Perry and Mayer began "fighting" non-stop due to a clash in differences, according to Us Magazine.
The pair appeared to grow serious at a rapid pace with both introducing each other to their respective families within months of dating. Mayer was photographed spending Christmas with Perry's family in Santa Barbara.
"Introducing her to his dad was a big deal," a source linked to Mayer said. "It was just too much, too soon."
