Kelly Osbourne Drug Addiction: 'Mom Had Me Put in Padded Cell'
Kelly Osbourne struggled with drug addiction as a young woman, and her family often went to desperate measures to get her help. Osbourne revealed that her mother even had her put in a "padded cell" to get her attention and scare her; today she is doing much better and working hard to stay sober.
"I've been to rehab seven times and to two mental institutions," Osbourne, 28, told Cosmopolitan magazine. "My mum even had me put in a padded cell once to scare me, but like a brat I just sat it out until she said, 'Well, that's not going to work.'"
Osbourne decided to clean up her act once her mother, Sharon, was diagnosed with cancer. It brought the two women closer together and helped repair old wounds caused by the younger Osbourne's drug use and rebellious behavior.
"I was faced with the choice of a career or spending what could have been the last days of my mother's life with her," Osbourne said. "I became my mum's nurse 24/7. I thought I was going to lose her – it was awful."
Thankfully, Sharon made a recovery, and today the two are closer than ever and both have successful careers. Plus, Kelly is engaged to Matthew Mosshart, whom she met in 2011. She is extremely happy but wants to make sure that people know about her past so that they may learn from it and find hope.
"What's been great is overcoming that and understanding that these people [critics] are just idiots who hurt your feelings because they want a reaction. I'm not perfect, but I don't want to be the prettiest in the room," Osbourne explained.
She hopes to be a good mother, like her own, and raise her children in England.
"I want to have kids – a boy and a girl … I'd like to live England when I do, as I will not have a baby call me, 'Mom.' I will kill myself before being called that," Osbourne joked.
Osbourne currently stars on "Fashion Police" on E! alongside Joan Rivers and Giuliana Rancic.
