Kendrick Lamar Discusses New Album, Not Pressured to Rush Out Next Project
Kendrick Lamar recently sat down with MTV to discuss his thoughts on releasing a new album.
The rapper confirmed that the follow up to his 2012 smash good kid, m.A.A.d city might take a little longer to create than some other artists' sophomore efforts.
"I'm letting the inspiration come for sure," said Lamar in an interview with the station. "If I knock myself into the wall, I'll probably be out the game for a minute because it's stressful trying to be creative rather than letting creativity come to you and being inspired by something."
He also touched on the importance of challenging himself by not listening to his first album, which is regarded by some as a classic in the hip-hop community.
"Man if I wasn't onstage, I probably wouldn't be listening to it [after] the day I put it out," he said. "I don't like to get stuck in doing something [so] that once I do move on and do my next joint, I don't want to get caught up in sounding the same or being locked in to what I've done already. I always want to elevate myself and challenge myself."
And although he claims to have ideas for the next album, Lamar stated that locking in and working on the project is something he has not done yet.
Lamar's 2012 album good kid, m.A.A.d city was released in 2012 and was certified platinum by the RIAA earlier this year. The rapper was also named one of GQ's men of the year, appearing on the cover of the heralded magazine.
Lamar's verse on Big Sean's "Control" record ended up becoming one of the most controversial raps to be released in hip-hop in recent years, as he called out many of his peers including Drake, J. Cole, and Wale to step up their rapping.
