Khan Academy Debuts iPad App
Khan Academy, the rapidly growing online lecture series, has come out with a new app that is available for the iPad in Apple's App store for free.
This new app version of the Khan Academy features the ability for time-syncing between devices that does not require an internet connection.
It also features an interactive transcript of the lectures, which will allow for users to treat their lectures like a virtual educator and will allow users to search easily for topics and different lectures.
With Khan Academy receiving great reviews some school districts could turn to virtual lectures as a way to save money on textbooks and as a way to get kids engaged in education.
By far the greatest feature of this new app is offline learning.
"If you're going on a road trip or if you're taking mass transit and you don't have cell service, or whatever, you can get the content," said Jason Rosoff, Khan Academy's Lead Designer.
Rosoff explains that the app will remember where users left off and will be able to sync progress between devices, however with this version both devices will need to sync online first before the feature will work.
The new app will also feature an interactive time-stamped transcript. Given that some lectures are rather long, it will allow users to go right to the part of the lecture that they need.
Khan Academy's app will have an enhanced version video scrubber which will allow users to repeat parts of the lecture easily, according to Rosoff.
But one of the more encouraging aspects of this new app is that lectures are watched outside the classroom and assignments can be completed collaboratively in class.
"The teacher is free to do a lot more of the human interaction," says Shantanu Sinha, President and COO of Khan Academy.
