Kim Kardashian Divorce: Short Marriage Negatively Affecting Children’s View
Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries and the ongoing drama surrounding the couple’s subsequent divorce is leaving some to wonder how the saga’s publicity is affecting children.
Kardashian, through her reality television series and recent media attention, is sending the wrong message to children, according to Jennifer L. Pozner, author of “Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV”.
“Reality shows don’t focus on what it takes to build real relationships,” said Pozner.
This claim is also supported by a recent Girl Scouts survey.
“Regular reality TV viewers accept and expect a higher level of drama, aggression, and bullying in their own,” said the study of more than 1,000 girls.
An overwhelming number of respondents who watch reality television regularly said fighting is a normal part of a romantic relationship. However, the media frenzy surrounding the Kardashian show is making some worry about the values it shows children.
“Our younger generation already has the idea that marriage is disposable. Seeing these ‘notables’ just reinforces their idea,” said 62-year-old Ohio Resident Jerry Sword to the Akron Beacon Journal.
It is not clear how the actions of one celebrity will affect young people across the country, but parents and therapists seem worried that marriage may portray a distorted image of nuptials.
Dr. Jacqueline Del Rosario, also known as “America's Marriage Doctor,” told the Akron Beacon Journal that marriage is more than a ceremony and reception.
“There is real work needed where couples spend time together and communicate,” said Del Rosario.
“While we may never know what really happened between the two, young people see people like Kim Kardashian and look up to her glamorous image, money and fame and think that her behavior to pull the plug on her marriage is what life is and should be like. To be honest, it is anything but,” Del Rosario added.
