'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Director Chides Marketing for Giving Away Film's Plot Twists
"Kingsman: The Golden Circle" has just come out, and already, fans have a good handle on what the entire movie will be all about. That's thanks to the overzealous coverage of the marketing team, as the director of the movie pointed out
There comes a point where the promotion comes as a detriment to the enjoyment of fans, as film director Matthew Vaughn shares with Deadline. That's something that the studio has to look into if an eventual trilogy is going to be a box office success as Vaughn hopes.
Just shy of saying that the promotional materials ruined the movie's surprises, the director chides the marketing effort done for the title. "I think the marketing department's done a bloody good job of giving away a lot of the twists and turns," he said.
"They insist it is the right thing to do. I think it isn't great for the viewing experience and the way I structured the first act," he summed up their conflict, adding how their style of promoting left him a bit "hamstrung" in constructing the movie's narrative.
"I'm definitely fighting like a crazy person right now to make sure those don't get given away," Vaughn added, referring to the few surprises that remain under wraps. There's a bit of hope after all for viewers, as Vaughn hopes the surprise twists will help drum up interest in the movie by word-of-mouth, as Gamespot notes.
It remains to be seen if "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" will have the box-office success of its predecessor, but it looks like the interest is there. Ninety-nine percent of raters indicated that they want to see the movie, according to Rotten Tomatoes, even as critics put it at an average rating of an unremarkable 5.3 out of 10.
