Kohl's Black Friday Commercial With Rebecca Black Outrages Customers
Customers vow to never shop at Kohl's again
Rebecca Black, the teen girl whose "Friday" song irritated American to the point that they could not help but listen to it repeatedly, will star in a new Kohl's commercial, appropriately promoting the retail chain's Black Friday sale.
The commercial shows a young woman (not Black), singing to the tune of Black's internet meme-sensation song: "Black Friday, Black Friday, gotta go to Kohl's on Black Friday. Everybody's going there at midnight, midnight."
According to Mashable, Black makes two cameos in the commercial.
Despite the light humor of taking an infamous song and combining it with a shopping day that some people say is "destroying" Thanksgiving, some commenters on YouTube were furious over the ad.
"Looks like Kohl's apparently doesn't realize how much people hate that song," said one comment.
Some comments suggested they would not even go to Kohl's because of the song.
"Well, looks like I'll be avoiding Kohl's now. Thanks for narrowing down my choices of stores to visit!" read another comment.
According to AdRants, come Kohl's employees have even threatened to quit because of the commercial.
For Black, however, her "Friday" song continues to be lucrative. On top of the undisclosed amount she received from Kohl's for the commercial, Forbes magazine reported that she made over $1 million in proceeds from the song, including YouTube views and downloads.
However, Slate put that amount much lower, at $40,000. Whatever the amount, Black is only 13 years old, and even $40,000 is much more than most kids are making at that age.
