Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe Divides Chicken Charlie's Fans: Delicious or a 'Heart Attack'?
The Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe debuted at the San Diego County Fair Saturday, and is just what it sounds like: two halves of a sweet, glazed donut stuffed with meat and melted cheese. The surely unhealthy creation was the brainchild of Chicken Charlie's, who makes traditionally deep-fried fair food.
The Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe seems to have been created as a rival for Dunkin Donuts' latest Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich, which has bacon and egg on a glazed donut. Though it's listed on the company's website as 360 calories, the Krispy Kreme sloppy joe most certainly has it beat in terms of clogging arteries.
"Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe! Your stomach will thank you!" reads the caption on the company's Facebook page, which is promoting the new sandwich in newspapers and across the internet.
"This is why other countries hate us. 'Merica," Eli Smith wrote underneath the new sandwich on Facebook.
"Looks delicious! I can't wait to eat one… or three!!" another user posted.
While many wondered when the idea from chef Charlie Boghosian in Del Mar, California would be coming to their town, others were not so excited about the potentially unhealthy sandwich.
"I don't think my stomach would thank me. I think it would punch me in the face and hit the reject button!" Erin responded to the ad.
"Looks like a heart attack waiting to happen!" another reader wrote.
Those in California may actually get a chance to sample the Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe at the Orange County Fair from July 12 to Aug. 11 and the Los Angeles County Fair from Aug. 30 to Sept. 29, according to The LA Times.
Some other deep-fried favorites of Chicken Charlie's fans include Krispy Kreme chicken sandwiches, bacon-wrapped pickles, deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and deep-fried battered red Kool-Aid.
