Kristen Johnston Diagnosed With Lupus Myelitis
Actress Kristen Johnston announced that she has been diagnosed with Lupus Myelitis, a rare autoimmune disorder. She made the announcement via a personal note on her Facebook page.
"Hey guys, I've put this off as long as possible, but it's time for me to be upfront with you about something that's been going on with me," Johnston started. "I've been really, really sick since early Sept. Full body muscle weakness to the extent that just walking [is] difficult, stairs [are] impossible and I even need a neck brace to hold my head up."
Johnston, who currently stars on TV Land's original series "The Exes" later revealed that she had been formally diagnosed with Lupus Myelitis. Lupus can affect numerous organs of the body, while Myelitis is a neurological disorder that affects the spinal cord, thereby affecting the limbs of the body as well. Together, the disorders can have devastating effects on a person's body.
The actress is receiving treatment after spending two weeks at the Mayo Clinic and plans to return to "The Exes" as soon as possible. For now, though, she has encouraged viewers to enjoy watching her friend Leah Remini guest star on the series.
"Thank GOD for Leah Remini! Her first episode airs Jan 1st, and it's truly hilarious, and I've seen it. Seriously, you guys will laugh your asses off at her as Stuart's sister. I promise you, you won't even miss me! (Well, maybe a teeny tiny bit?)" Johnston posted.
"I gotta say, TV Land and everyone at 'the exes' have just been amazing, all of them … so patient, understanding, loving & supportive. It's true that when you're sick, you find out who your real friends are…" she concluded.
Fans are rallying to support the actress who has been open and honest about her life and her struggle with alcoholism, which she wound up beating.
"Praying for you," Sheryl Gregory tweeted. "Sending you prayers and lots of love!"
