Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult star in new sci-fi romance movie 'Equals'

Set in an unnamed timed, "Equals" tells a story of two individuals in a futuristic utopia that does not allow anyone to let their human emotions control them.

The movie, which is written and directed by Drake Doremus ("Like Crazy"), stars Kristen Stewart as Nia, and Nicholas Hoult as Silas. In Equals, human emotions have been eradicated, and anyone who gets infected with this "disease" will be outcast.

After a world-shattering war, the Earth was divided into two camps, the Collective and a far-off peninsula, where the survivors once lived. In the story, every disease has now been cured, including cancer and the most common colds. However, "human emotions" have now been forbidden at the Collective, which forbids everyone to love and have sex.

As a result, the Collective is full of "drone-like" individuals, who are neither happy nor content. Everyone just does what they are supposed to do, commuting on the trains, wearing their white uniforms, listening to voices from their world's unknown watchers, or carrying out their duties. Everyone at the Collective lives in fear of acquiring Switched-on-Syndrome or SOS, which allows their emotions to resurface. The victims of the disease are forced into a secluded prison, or to commit suicide.

Nia and Silas work at the Collective, as a writer and an illustrator. Silas will become an outcast after being infected with SOS, and will immediately get drawn to Nia. Nia will get infected, but will hide her condition. Nia and Silas will slowly express their emotions through half-lidded stares, and long-burning gaze, but will still try to fight their emotions.

Eventually, the two fall in love with each other, in a world where falling desperately in love is dangerous. The two finally hook up, and will now face the consequences of their actions, and escape from the repressive Collective.

Equals premiered in Venice last Sept. 5. No official release date yet was given for its worldwide premiere.
