It was at age nine that his parents divorced and Cobain was plagued with depression. Following Nirvana's widespread success, Cobain began struggling with a heroin addiction after becoming uncomfortable and frustrated in the public eye.
Unable to cope with his fame and public image, professional and personal pressures got the best of the singer, and on April 8, 1994, he was found dead in his Seattle home. Four days earlier, Cobain had died of suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.
Cobain left behind his wife, Courtney Love, and daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, born Aug. 18, 1992.
Since Nirvana's debut with Cobain as a songwriter, the group has sold over 25 million albums in the U.S. alone, and over 50 million worldwide.
The band is best known for their hit songs "Smells Like a Teen Spirit," "All Apologies," and "Come as You Are," to name a few.
Cobain's home town of Aberdeen, Wash., honored the singer in 2005 with a sign: "Welcome to Aberdeen- Come As You Are."
His suicide has become a topic of public fascination, with many fans insistent that the singer was instead murdered. Today, Nirvana fans and Cobain admirers are remembering the lost singer.
"18 years without Kurt Cobain : (," posted Yaya.
"We miss you Kirt Cobain," wrote Lou.
"So Kurt Cobain died 18 years ago today," wrote Twitter user Krista. "That makes me feel OLD. A shame he didn't get to feel that way."
