Lagerfeld's Adele Weight Comments Continue: 'Roundish,' Says Fashion Guru
Karl Lagerfeld rebuked his previous criticism that Adele was "a little too fat," instead starting a firestorm by saying that the singer was "a little roundish."
The acclaimed designer is well known for his sharp comments about women, including Pippa Middleton and Michelle Obama.
This week, Lagerfeld insisted that his "fat" remark about Adele was taken out of context.
"I never said that she was fat, I said that she was a little roundish," said the fashion mogul speaking to CNN's "Fashion: Backstage Pass."
Chanel's creative director went on to suggest that his critique served a good purpose.
"But for such a beautiful girl, after that she lost eight kilo (17.6 pounds), so I think the message was not that bad," Lagerfeld noted.
Last year, Lagerfeld landed in hot water for referring to the "Rolling in the Deep" singer as "a little too fat."
"I prefer Adele and Florence Welch," the designer told Metro Paris. "But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and divine voice."
However, he later offered his apologies.
"I'd like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer," Lagerfeld told Metro New York. "Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought. Adele is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her."
As for Adele's reaction to Lagerfeld's controversial comment, the Grammy Award winner coolly admitted that she never intended to change her weight.
"I never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines," said the 25-year-old singer speaking to People magazine. "I represent the majority of women and I'm very proud of that."
"I'd lose weight if I was an actress and had to play a role where you're supposed to be 40 pounds lighter, but weight has nothing to do with my career," added. "Even when I was signing [a contract], most of the industry knew if anyone ever dared say [lose weight] to me, they wouldn't be working with me."
Meanwhile, Lagerfeld's past comments have included advising Pippa Middlton to "only show her back" and that Michelle Obama's haircut including bangs was "bad."
"Kate Middleton has a nice silhouette and she is the right girl for that boy," Lagerfeld stated of the British royal couple last year. "I like that kind of woman, I like romantic beauties."
As for Kate's little sister Pippa, the fashion guru was far less kind.
"On the other hand, her sister struggles. I don't like the sister's face. She should only show her back," the designer told The Sun U.K.
Lagerfeld later apologized for his sharp comment, saying, "I didn't mean that," according to Vogue U.K.
The designer's brazen comment on the First Lady occurred earlier this year.
"I don't understand the change of hair," started Lagerfeld speaking to the French television station Canal Plus. "Frankly, the fringe was a bad idea. It's not good."
