Latest 'Choice on Earth' Cards Raise Outcry From Pro-Life Groups
Pro-life advocates denounce Planned Parenthood's pro-choice holiday cards as a 'blatant mockery of Christian values.'
Since the first production in 2002, Planned Parenthoods Choice on Earth holiday cards have generated controversy between pro-life and pro-choice groups. The recent release of the third edition is once again stirring up a backlash of criticism against the organization and its message.
The cards, featured on the Planned Parenthood website, depict a winter theme with snowflakes on the front above the words Choice on Earth. Inside, the message reads Warmest wishes for a peaceful holiday season.
Jim Sedlak, executive director of American Life Leagues STOPP (Stop Planned Parenthood) International, denounced the organizations continued use of these products to push its agenda.
"In its continual attempt to 'normalize' abortion, Planned Parenthood has once again chosen to offend the Christian community by releasing the latest edition of its 'Choice on Earth' holiday cards," said Sedlak.
The main point of controversy lies in the phrase Choice on Earth, derived from the Biblical proclamation of Peace on Earth when angels announced the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. Pro-life groups are outraged over the use of the word choice to link abortion to a day which celebrates the birth of Jesus.
Sedlak commented, "By replacing 'peace' with 'choice,' or more accurately, 'killing the innocent on earth,' Planned Parenthood is essentially saying 'abortion on earth. This blatant mockery of Christian values - and of Christ Himself - truly demonstrates the bigoted, anti-religion, anti-God nature of Planned Parenthood."
Other products advertised on the Planned Parenthood website have been the source of conflict, including the summer release of I Had an Abortion t-shirts and a recent advertisement stating Give the gift that stops giving a gift certificate for a holiday vasectomy at Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood has claimed that the outcries against their products have increased sales in the past two years. In response to critics, Planned Parenthood President Gloria Feldt issued a statement: Recent anti-choice attacks on Planned Parenthoods Choice on Earth holiday card are absurd. A very popular greeting card among America's pro-choice majority for almost a decade, it sends an inclusive seasonal message for people of all faiths.
However, pro-life advocates disagree.
Contrary to the open-minded image the abortion organization aims to present for itself, Planned Parenthood has zero tolerance for anyone-or any religious group-that recognizes abortion as an evil act that kills a preborn baby, said Sedlak.
"We encourage all parents, educators, mentors and students to educate themselves about Planned Parenthood."
