'Law and Order SVU' Season 18 Spoilers: Show Takes One Month Hiatus; Donald Trump Episode Shelved?
It's been a while since fans saw Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and company in action on the small screen. Unfortunately, the "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" season 18 is not concluding anytime soon.
The series won't be back until March 22, but when it does, fans will be treated with episode 13, "Genes." In this installment, the team will deal with a man who claims that his genetics cause him to commit rape.
The case "hits a nerve with Benson," per the synopsis of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" season 18. It will be interesting to see how this all goes down. Unfortunately, there are still a couple of weeks left before fans can watch it all unfold.
What viewers will never get to see on the small screen is the controversial episode, "Unstoppable," inspired by then-presidential hopeful, Donald Trump.
After holding off its broadcast, NBC ultimately shelved the "Law and Order: SVU" season 18 episode, which featured actor Gary Cole as a presidential candidate being accused of rape and sexual harassment during his campaign.
Cast member Ice-T believes that this "Law and Order: SVU" season 18 episode is not a loss. During an interview with Vanity Fair, he commented that it "wasn't one of our best shows," adding that it is not worth showing.
"There was this guy who was running for president — he was very Trump-ish, and girls were coming out of the woodwork saying he was raping them," Ice-T said, explaining the plot of the installment.
"And me and Mariska, we're on his bumper, and he's sweating it. But at the end of the day, it comes out that he was innocent. He didn't do it. So we've got to apologize, and he's still doing his thing, talking his s—t. And it turns out that his campaign advisor, who was his best friend, was booby-trapping him because he knew he would be terrible for America!" he went on to say.
Before "Law and Order: SVU" season 18 could air it, however, real life began to mirror the episode as Trump was then also entangled in issues and allegations regarding sexual misconduct with a recording of him making demeaning comments about women being leaked.
Ice-T remembers how they realized that the events echoed the episode and that even Cole "channeled" Trump even though he was not portraying him.
While the show "wants to be close, but not too close," he believes NBC just deemed it "cheesy or corny." "So I think they just got rid of it," he said, adding that he does not care about it.
