'Law & Order: SVU' Season 18 Episode 16: Benson Takes Down Newsroom Rapist
A news anchor will announce on live television that her boss is a rapist in the upcoming episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."
In the episode titled "The Newsroom," the synopsis (according to CarterMatt) reveals that Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and her team will be tapped to investigate another rape case. A journalist (guest star Bonnie Somerville) discloses on live television that her superior has molested her. As the probe intensifies, the SVU will find themselves with a shortage of witnesses. No one seems to want to talk out of fear of being dismissed from their jobs.
Benson and Barba (Raul Esparza) have the hard task of convincing these individuals to stand up for justice. After the victim's disclosure, she has been considered an outcast among her colleagues. Her boss, a rich man who believes he can get away with the rape, is doing everything to stop the investigation from progressing. Benson and the SVU must find witnesses as soon as possible and make a solid case against the executive. But what if there really is no one who wants to talk?
Last episode, the squad took down another rapist. David (Chris Diamantopoulos) killed a woman out of spite and made sure the authorities would have a tough time placing him behind bars. The investigation reveals that the victim was not only working for him during the time of her death, but they were romantically involved. David was a skilled hacker. To stop the probe, he hacked into the database of the New York police department, threatening to expose secrets he had no business dealing with.
Eventually, Benson and the others found enough evidence against him. Later on, Barba surprised Benson with a confession. He remembers a past incident where he paid a drug addict money to get a testimony. The woman then died because she overdosed. Barba blamed himself for what happened, regretting that he was partly the reason why she died.
