Leona Lewis Speaks Out Against Rihanna, Miley Cyrus Twerking
Leona Lewis, the 28-year-old British singer-songwriter, does not agree with Rihanna and Miley Cyrus' brand of entertainment that focuses on the dance craze "twerking."
Lewis, the former X Factor winner, spoke about her issues with Cyrus, 21, and Rihanna, 25, dancing provocatively in the dance that has become popular. Still Lewis insisted that it may not be the entertainers' fault.
"You can't blame those girls, who are being young and sometimes dumb. They're just expressing themselves how they want to," Lewis said in a Mirror Online report. "Girls are not perfect, we all make mistakes."
One of Lewis' issues with twerking is that young girls have begun to take part in the dance. However, the singer spoke about how parents can avoid that from happening.
"Being sexual and in your face is not great for girls who are quite young,"Lewis told Mirror Online. "It depends what environment you're brought up in, but personally I've got a god-daughter and little nieces and I don't want them to see me acting crazy and naked in my music videos."
She spoke about how parents should take control of the entertainment that their children consume.
"So it's up to the parents as well to be able to control what their children are watching," Lewis said. "It's like, 'don't twerk, you're a six year old. Stop it.'"
While she may not be speaking about six year olds, Cyrus previously spoke about her young fans understanding her controversial behavior that includes twerking.
"I mean, it's kind of what I want. I'm an artist, so I'm hoping that I get a little attention or my record sales might be a little sketch," Cyrus told "Today" host Matt Lauer. "I don't ever really plan to offend people, but sometimes that just happens because I think people, they're not open to what they don't understand. But that's why when I'm singing for my fans, because they're all really young so they understand what I'm doing."
