LG G4 and V10 Become 'Inoperable' From 'Bootloop Defect'; Owners File Lawsuit

Several owners of LG G4 and LG V10 mobile devices have come together to file a case against the South Korean electronics manufacturer for a severe unit defect that renders their devices "inoperable."

The class-action lawsuit points out that LG mishandled the situation where a number of LG G4 and V10 users were complaining about the same problem affecting their devices. The complainants are four individuals coming from California, Florida, New York and Washington.

In the summary of the case that was filed at the judicial court of the Central District of California, the bootloop defect was described as a device problem that makes the LG G4 and V10 units "crash and then reboot interminably" making them "inoperable and unfit for any use."

According to a report from Ars Technica, the class-action lawsuit maintains that LG has violated warranty laws and is liable for "unjust enrichment" and "unfair trade."

In the case of the one of the plaintiffs from Florida, he experienced the device problem back in November 2015, prompting him to visit an AT&T repair center. The technician that looked into his LG G4 declared that the "phone could not be repaired" so the U.S. carrier sent him a replacement phone after the incident.

However, in February 2016, the said complainant experienced the same defect from his replacement LG G4 so AT&T gave him another brand new unit. However, the third LG G4 unit he owned still experienced the same defect symptoms.

He decided to use his third LG G4 unit for lesser time and minimal tasks. But just this month, the complainant's wife's LG G4 failed as a result of the bootloop defect as well. According to the account in the lawsuit, this time, LG refused to address the issue because the warranty on her phone expired in September 2016.

The lawsuit claims that LG mishandled the situation, saying, "LG did not undertake a recall or offer an adequate remedy to consumers who purchased the LG G4 phone. LG instead replaced LG G4s that failed within the one-year warranty period with phones that had the same defect. And LG refused to provide any remedy to purchasers of LG G4s that failed outside the warranty period because of the bootloop defect."
