Interfaith leaders in Liberia were commended Thursday, Nov. 4 for being instrumental in helping restore peace following the latest violence that erupted in the capital city of Monrovia. The violence, which resulted in 16 deaths and 208 reported injuries, was initially reported as being a Muslim-Christian conflict, but was later blamed on rebels resistant to relinquishing weapons.
Church World Service, which paid tribute to the Liberian Interfaith Leaders Thursday, reported that after the burning of several churches, mosques and schools in the Redlight and Jacob Town areas outside Monrovia on Friday, Oct. 29, Christian and Muslim religious leaders quickly met and visited five area radio stations, calling via broadcast for calm and cessation to further violence and burnings.
The next day, the Liberian interfaith team also met with United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) officials.
